Customs and VAT in France: What Does an Imported iPhone Really Cost?

01. Introduction

Importing an iPhone from China may seem attractive. However, it is essential to understand the actual costs involved. This article explains customs fees and VAT in France.

02. Customs Fees

When importing an iPhone to France, customs fees apply. These fees vary depending on the value of the device and its origin. Here are the steps to follow:

• Check the value of the iPhone. This includes the purchase price and shipping costs.
• Consult customs tariffs. Generally, mobile phones are subject to a rate of 2.7%.
• Prepare the necessary documents. Keep the invoice and any other shipping documents.

03. VAT in France

In addition to customs fees, VAT applies to imports. In France, the standard VAT rate is 20%. Here's how it works:

1. Calculate the total amount of the purchase, including customs fees.
2. Apply the VAT rate to this amount.
3. Payment of VAT: it is generally paid upon receipt of the package.

04. Example of Total Cost

Imagine you buy an iPhone for 1000 euros in China. Here's the calculation:

• Purchase price: 1000 euros
• Customs fees (2.7%): 27 euros
• Amount before VAT: 1027 euros
• VAT (20%): 205.40 euros

Total cost: 1232.40 euros. This amount may be higher than what you would have paid in a store in France.
