An original Apple-1, a piece of computing history, could sell for between $500,000 and $800,000 at an auction scheduled for October. This model, known as "Hatfield", is listed as number 48 on the Apple-1 registry and is fully functional.

An Intriguing Story

This model was purchased by Fred Hatfield, a computer enthusiast working at Computer Data Systems. What makes this example even more special is that it is signed by Steve Wozniak, one of the co-founders of Apple, and comes with a letter from Steve Jobs. In this letter, Jobs had offered Hatfield an exchange for an Apple II, following complaints about the Apple-1's software. However, Hatfield declined this offer as it required a payment of $400 for the upgrade.

A Historic Investment

Hatfield sold this Apple-1 in 2013 for $40,000 when it was non-functional. The new buyer managed to repair it, have it signed by Wozniak, and then resell it at auction for the impressive sum of $671,400. It is now returning to the market, and its price could still rise.

A Rare Piece

In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak produced 200 Apple-1 units. This model was originally sold as a bare circuit board to be assembled by enthusiasts. However, Jobs sold 50 fully assembled units to a California retailer, The Byte Shop, which resold them for $666.66 each.

Auction Details

The Hatfield Apple-1 will be on public display in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, and New York. Dates and information regarding the exhibition are available on the auction house's website. Bidding will be open from October 4 to 14.
